In 2005 I received an NSF CAREER award to support my research into the mechanics and control of hydrodynamic interactons within schools of marine animals and/or biomorphic aquatic robots.
In July 2006 I was flown to Washington DC to receive the Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers (PECASE) and to have my photo taken with George Bush. The White House and NSF press releases are both linked here.
In March 2007 I was selected to receive the Engineering Council Award for Excellence in Advising for my interactions with undergraduates at UIUC.
My student evaluations regularly qualify me for UIUC's List of Teachers Ranked as Excellent by Their Students. I've also received a Two-Year Effective Teaching Award from my department's Alumni Association, signifying that departmental alumni polled two years after graduating remembered me as their most effective instructor.
